I’m proud to be co-chair of the 2015 Manasota March for Babies, the Sarasota and Manatee County, Florida, chapter of the annual national event to benefit March of Dimes. I’m sure you’re familiar with March of Dimes, the nonprofit organization dedicated to helping moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.
Serving with me as co-chair this year is Debbie Harman, RNC, BA, CBC, Clinical Manager of Neonatal Services at Sarasota Memorial Health Care. Yesterday, Debbie and I were pleased to host a kick-off luncheon for local business leaders who understand the importance of giving back to their communities. Those in attendance work for companies ranging from major employers to small companies, including:
- Cigna Corporation
- Core Construction
- GE Aviation
- Sarasota Memorial Health Care
- Williams Parker Harrison Dietz & Getzen
And that’s just to name a few! I was also happy to spend time today with Melissa, who generously offered to share the touching story of her twin daughters being born prematurely less than a year ago. Thanks to the exceptional care they received in Sarasota Memorial’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, babies Brinlee and Cali were at today’s luncheon with their mom, perfect examples of the strides March of Dimes has made over the years to provide solutions for babies born too soon.
March for Babies is the nation’s premier walking event, starting in 1970, and now held in more than 750 communities. Last year was the first time Voalte participated, and we were thrilled to raise $10,610! From senior management to individual team members, everyone feels good about helping babies. Participating as a company, and partnering with the largest and most prestigious healthcare facility in our area, is a great way to drive teamwork, support our community and contribute to a wonderful charity.
Our local event takes place Saturday, May 2, 2015, at JD Hamel Park in downtown Sarasota. It will be an unforgettable day as Manasota March for Babies strives to raise $280,000. (To contribute, you can visit my personal fundraising page.) Please consider joining us by finding a March for Babies event in your area.
Candace Smith, MPA, RN, NEA-BC, is Chief Nursing Officer at Voalte.
