Candice Friestad, MSN, MBA, RN, Director of Clinical Informatics, and Jill Casanova, MBA, BSN, RN, CCRN, Director of Critical Care and Adult Specialty Services at Avera Health, spoke this afternoon at VUE16, the Voalte User Experience conference.
Covering the topic of “Sending clinical data to Voalte smartphones,” Candice and Jill showed how Voalte Platform is helping to avoid delays in patient throughput and speed the discharge process at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. They also pointed to results of a study on Respiratory Therapy reporting missed or late medications due to delayed orders.
Avera McKennan rolled out Voalte Platform in October 2015 in all nursing units, and is working to expand the communication platform throughout Avera Health facilities across South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.
“How can we shorten the discharge process and streamline our workflow?” Jill asked the audience of 150 health IT and clinical leaders at VUE16. “We have created a discharge notification process that starts when a physician enters a discharge order in the EMR. Our Connexall middleware routes a notification with specific discharge instructions to the entire team: Respiratory Therapist, Pharmacy, Social Work and Case Management. By notifying the appropriate people at the appropriate time, we can make sure our patients have the treatments and medications they need upon discharge. It’s been a huge win by saving time for patients and simplifying workflow for staff. ”
Candice expanded on the importance of Voalte Platform at Avera McKennan. “Voalte for us has become a verb,” she said. “It’s not just ‘text’ any more. Our communication consists of 82 percent Voalte text messages, and the rest voice. The result is that care is delivered faster and with better information.”
