I have the title of Chief Nurse Executive, but sometimes it feels like my title should be tour guide. Everyone seems to want to see Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. And I don’t blame them. At only 20 months old, we are the nation’s newest freestanding children’s hospital and certainly the most sophisticated building I’ve worked at in my 37-year healthcare career.
One area that I am particularly proud to show off is our Clinical Logistics Center. This high-tech hub is deep inside the hospital and provides a patient safety tool that is unparalleled in healthcare.
The Logistics Center is staffed by a trained medical professional who tracks vital signs of patients 24 hours a day, acting as eyes and ears even when a nurse is away from the bedside. That professional is able to provide the most significant level of monitoring to children at the greatest risk by integrating data from our sophisticated Electronic Health Record, such as a patient’s recent lab work, medical history and specialty clinic reports.
Should the patient show signs of distress, The Logistics Center is able to use Voalte smartphones to immediately communicate with the child’s nurse. The Logistics team also has the ability to make instant audio contact with the child and family in the room. With permission, the team may also use a high-definition camera installed in each patient room to get a visual of the child. The image is so precise that it can show a child’s chest rising and falling.
At Nemours, we like to say that our high-tech facility allows us to deliver high-touch care. No area of the hospital demonstrates that as well as our Logistics Center. Now, if I could only get The Logistics Center to lead some of these tours!
