One of the highlights of VUE18 last year was the “sneak preview” of Voalte Insight, an analytics tool for optimizing care team communication. When this year’s Voalte User Experience conference kicked off today at The Westin Sarasota, attendees saw just how quickly and easily they can use this powerful tool to:
- avoid interrupting physicians with unnecessary messages, and
- drive workflow improvements.
No More “Thank Yous” or “OKs”
In October 2018, community-based Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire went live with the Voalte communications platform, but soon found that its hospitalists felt too many text messages were interrupting their work. In a VUE19 Spotlight presentation, David Briden, the hospital’s Chief Information Officer, and Ben Burns, IS Support Supervisor, shared how Voalte Insight helped them identify and eliminate one cause of this problem.
Using data from the easily accessible reports and dashboards in Voalte Insight, Exeter found that 5,000 of the 35,000 Voalte weekly text messages (or 17%) were either “OK” or “Thank you.” One month after a memo advised users that these responses were not only unnecessary but detrimental, the percentage of “OK” and “Thank You” messages dropped to 0.5%.
Another insight Exeter Hospital gained from this new tool was that better order sets also could reduce unnecessary messages. The hospital is now considering changing some of its order protocols, such as attaching resume diet orders with diagnostic or procedure orders; resuming blood pressure medications after a test; or extending an IV for up to one additional day.
We’re looking forward to hearing more time-saving solutions from Voalte customers over the next couple days at VUE19. Subscribe to the blog to receive updates in your inbox!
